Minimalism – less is more

We live in the world where everyone wants more: more money, more things, more power, more friends… But we all have the same 24 hours a day. We try to fit more things and activities in our day with the expense of our sleep and the quality of participation in our own life. We multitask, we take shortcuts, always in a rush… and it causes the stress, anxiety, for some people even depression. We tend to spend more time thinking about the past or planning future than in the present moment. It is an epidemic of our generation.

Minimalism is the approach that suggest to simplify your life and cut out everything that you do not essentially need. It can be applied to every part of your life. It is the complete opposite to the todays consumerism culture. It helps to bring you back to the present moment and live that 24 hours with the full awareness, without the distractions.

Many people start minimalism journey by looking at their possessions and getting rid of everything they do not use daily. You can find stories of people who have done it in a cardinal way and live with a very few possessions. Read about Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus story, it is a great example how little actually a human being needs, and that more things do not correlate with more happiness. Opposite actually. It correlates with more responsibility, more stress, longer work hours, as you have to pay for those things. I was always leaned to this way of thinking, but i saw society promoting the opposite, everyone on social media looks so happy with their fancy cars, beautiful make up and take away coffee… I was a typical consumer, i worked a lot to earn the money that I needed to reach all those social goals. But this year something changed in me, I could not lie to myself anymore. My values were always clear and money, social status have never been not even in top ten motives in my life. But I did not have my values aligned with my actual lifestyle. I realized that I was not happy, because I did not have time for myself. I did not feel being myself, as I was believing  in one thing, but actually living the opposite.

My approach to minimalism started with looking at my life and getting rid of the things that do not have real value to me. I stopped using social media, shopping for clothing, beauty care products, I stopped drinking, eating out. In the same time I started my zero waste journey and was being aware of my ecological impact and learning the zero waste. It might sound like in that one month I drastically changed my life, but I didn’t. I all came very naturally because it was the real me, doing the things that I believe in. After one month passed I knew for sure: I do not need those things! I decided to use my social media only as a tool to spread the positive messages of my blog, I will shop only when I will need something, I will drink only if I will really feel like, and I will continue cooking my healthy meals at home. All this not only helped me to be eco-aware, but also self-aware. I feel I know myself better now and I am ready stand for my beliefs.

It’s been great so far, but together with other decisions I have decided to quit my job. On May 31st will be the last day in my job. I feel sure about this decision, but as I don’t know what is coming next I feel stressed as the day come closer. But I know it is a change I need to do. I want my life simple. I need more time for myself, so I could live authentically and be fully committed to my values.

  1. Nice one, Lina. Minimalism is a very important step toward the pursue of happiness, in my opinion. I dont know if you have the same experience, but I found that most of my clutter was in my mind, I was never too materialist or had big material attachments, but my mind is full of “stuff” to get rid of. How do you deal with minimalism for the mind (if you could think of that)?


  2. I could not agree with you more! The change in your mind is the most important, but the most difficult. You have to start from somewhere though. Decluttering your physical space can help you focus and increase awareness about your surroundings. You have to create the best environment for the change to happen. Meditation, mindfulness are great tools as well. I am planning to write about it in the near future. Thank you for such a great question!
